Joseph Pilates, origionally from Germany developed a unique exercise system in the early 1900's. This system now bears his name.
Suffering as a child from asthma and rickets, Pilates had a frail and sickly body. In order to improve his health, he developed a series of exercises. Later, he developed machines to further those exercises. As his focus in this area developed, he began to share his ideas with others. This lead to the opening of his first studio in 1926, in New York City.
Pilates combined ballet, gymnastics, and yoga exercises creating a truely effective overall body conditioning system. Pilates has both Matwork and Equipment classes. The equipment designed to support this system, bearing such names as the "Reformer", the "Cadillac", the "Chair", and the "Full Barrel", often called to mind mid - evil torture machines. They help you further your Pilates experience and take your body to a whole new level. Pilates equipment relies on springs rather than weights, leading to a more fluid experience. Pilates Matwork you can do anywhere!
So what does Pilates really do? It strengthens your whole body, especially abs, tones muscles, improves posture, flexibility, and balance. It unites your body and mind.
Pilates has been a secret of dancers and gymnasts for almost a 100 years! George Balanchine of the NYC Ballet was a huge fan of Pilates. Other fans include professional athletes, models, actors, business professionals, chiropractors, doctors, and people like yourself.
Whether, you're looking for a "dancer" body or to get in better shape, Pilates will take you there. Pilates helps reduce stress, increase endurance, feel better and look better.
